Construction of an Urban Public Space System Based on Greenway Network:A Case Study of Maoming Urban Built-up Area
Urban renewal focuses on people's needs and the creation of high-quality public spaces constitutes a significant part of the effort. This paper explores the theory and methods of building a public space system through the development of a greenway network from a systematic connection approach. At the theoretical level,it emphasizes the significance role that greenway networks play in the creation of pub-lic spaces. At the methodological level, the paper summarizes the experience and methods in greenway planning, detailed design, and the spatial governance mecha-nisms for implementation by drawing from the planning practice of Maoming Urban Built-up Area. With a critique of planning greenways for the sake of greenways, the paper advocates for building continuous public space systems through greenway net-works.It proposes transforming greenways from simple"slow facilities"and"land-scape spaces"to"places"designed for everyday life.Hence creating greenways should become a dynamic process of co-construction,governance,and shared respon-sibility among all stakeholders.
