Path and Practice of Protecting and Inheriting Overseas Chinese Hometown Cultural Heritage:A Case Study of Xiangshan Ancient City
In the past, the protection efforts primarily focused on the material aspect, achieving significant short-term results but lacking long-term sustainability.Recogniz-ing the shortcomings of three previous approaches, the paper proposes a transforma-tive sustainable model for conserving and inheriting overseas Chinese cultural heri-tage.Using Xiangshan Ancient City in Zhongshan,Guangdong Province as a case study, the paper considers both the physical and social aspects, covering three dimen-sions:people,material,and historical events.Sustainable conservation and inheri-tance strategies are proposed in five areas:cultural sustainability:establishing a cul-tural core and reshaping the Great Xiangshan Cultural Sphere;residential sustainabil-ity:upgrading facilities and addressing critical issues related to residents'liveli-hoods;spatial sustainability:preserving the character of the Ancient City while revi-talizing a thousand-year-old county;economic sustainability:upgrading and adjusting economic structure to better reflect Xiangshan's cultural memories;and social sustain-ability:reconstructing social spaces and strengthening overseas Chinese social net-works.
