Research on the Impact of Livability on Urban Innovation—Based on Supply-side and Demand-side Perspective
The livability of cities promotes innovative development through two paths:supply side factor driving and demand side market driving.Empirical analysis based on panel data of 286 prefecture level and above cities in China from 2012 to 2022.Research has found that:firstly, natural livability, social livability, and cultural livability together constitute urban livability, which promotes urban innovation and development. This result still holds true in a series of robustness tests, including replacing variables, excluding key cities, and considering endogeneity issues.Secondly, urban livability promotes innovative development through factor driven and market driven factors, that is,through the aggregation of talent capital, research and development capital, and entrepreneurial capital on the supply side, and the improvement of market size and structure on the demand side, indirectly promoting the increase of innovation.Thirdly, regression analysis based on a threshold model with average wage as the threshold variable found that the livability represented by the average wage of a city has a more significant positive impact on urban innovation and development. As the average wage increases and crosses the threshold, the positive impact of livability on urban innovation and development strengthens. In the future, focusing on promoting the modernization of Chinese style cities with harmonious coexistence between humans and nature and improving the ecological civilization system,it is necessary to strengthen the construction of urban livability from three aspects:ecology, society, and cultural environment. In addition, cities need to focus on attracting and cultivating innovative elements and carry out urban livability construction.Besides, cities need to strengthen the cultivation of innovative technologies and the creation of a consumer environment, attaching importance to the coordinated construction of urban livability and business suitability.
