An Interpretation of Di Bin Gong in the Second Chapter of the Tsinghua Sigao Manuscript
In the second chapter of the Tsinghua Sigao 四告 manuscript,Bo Qin 伯禽 prayed to Di bin gong 帝宾工.The word bin 宾 is used in the Shangshu 尚书"hong fan 洪范"chapter to refer to the officials in charge of etiquette.Gong 工 is a collective name for officer. The four words mingdian siyi 明典司仪 were placed after the title Di bin gong to indicate their duties.Di bin gong were the officials in charge of the etiquette code in heaven and the counterpart of the relevant human officials in the imperial court. An understanding of these duties,"understanding the codes and managing etiquette"mingdian siyi 明典司仪,helps us understand changes in the concept of weiyi 威仪."Codes"Dian 典 and"Etiquette"yi 仪 are of fundamental importance in the political life of the Western Zhou Dynasty. That Bo qin took this as the core content of his prayer, suggests that he was hoping that the highest authority in charge of weiyi could assist him in upholding the code and etiquette.
