A Study of the Phrase Se Er Jin Li in the Shanghai Museum Ju Zhi Wang TianXia Manuscript
Through an investigation of the handwriting pattern and residual strokes in the Shanghai Museum Ju zhi wang tianxia 举治王天下 manuscript,it can be determined that the remaining indecipherable character after min 民 on slip 32 can be transcribed as se 啬(穑).The new transcription se er jin li 穑而尽力 means that Shun tried his best to farm and harvest. This can be verified with the phrase Shun se yu tongtu zhi tian 舜穑于童土之田 in the Zi Gao 子羔 manuscript and shun ju hu tongtu zhi di 舜举乎童土之地 in the"Xu Wu Gui"徐无鬼 chapter of the Zhuangzi 庄子.
