The balanced scorecard,as a highly recognized and widely used performance management tool, not only compensates for the shortcomings of traditional performance evaluation that places too much emphasis on financial indicators and too little emphasis on non-financial indicators, but also overcomes the limitations of performance evaluation that focuses too much on stockholder interests and seriously ignores other stakeholders.Although the balanced scorecard is recognized as one of the greatest innovative practices over the past 30 years,it must also be recognized that, like other innovations, the idea and method of the balanced scorecard are inevitably limited by the times. In the ESG era,the limitations of the balanced scorecard in not considering green development and environmental performance have become increasingly apparent. This paper first introduces the application, satisfaction rate,as well as advantages and disadvantages of the balanced scorecard based on research reports from management consulting companies Bain & Company and BSC Designer. This paper then analyzes, from the ESG perspective, the limitations of the balanced scorecard and explores different solutions for expanding and improving it in the ESG era, pointing out that building the Sustainability Balanced Scorecard(SBSC)is in line with the requirements of the ESG era and is the only way to promote the balanced scorecard to keep pace with the times. Finally, the main conclusions and insights of the paper are briefly summarized.
