As one of the representative Chinese female writers in Singapore, Sun Ailing shows a style of a combination of modernism, realism and romanticism, and her writing is based on a strong sense of cultural origin. The overall narrative style of her novels carries a lasting classical narrative sense and demonstrates the classic characteristics of Chinese literature. A close study of the classification and narra-tive functions of the Chinese narrative in her novels reveals three characteristics of her novel narrative:1) rooted in the cultural tradition of two great classics-The Book of Songs and Chu Ci;2) drawing on the narrative structure and content of Tang Dynasty legend novels and Song Dynasty storybooks;and 3) inte-grating the overall reproduction of modern transformation of Chinese culture.
