Research Progresses on Interaction between Silkworm and Mulberry Tree
The cultivation of mulberry tree for silkworm rearing is a remarkable achievement of the world's agricultural civilization. The domesticated silkworm,a specialist of mulberry leaves,is artificially selected from its ancestor the wild mulberry silkworm and is the first lepidopteran insect to have a se-quenced genome. This review has presented the current studies for the co-evolution of silkworm and mul-berry tree, including the interactions between silkworm digestive proteases and mulberry protease inhibi-tors,the adaptations of silkworm to mulberry secondary metabolites, and the significance of mulberry ure-ase on nitrogen metabolism of silkworm,to provide insights into the future studies of the interaction be-tween silkworm and mulberry tree, and to expand the knowledge on the interactions between phytopha-gous insects and their host plants.
