A Study on Canton Export Lacquerware Shops in the Qing Dynasty
Canton export lacquerware is the lacquerware produced and manufactured by Guangdong artisans according to the demands of overseas markets and sold to western countries such as Europe and America.By reviewing the western trade orders,records of visits to China,trademarks and inscriptions of exported lacquerware,and examining the production scale,product characteristics and sales situation of Canton export lacquerware merchants and their shops during different periods of Qing Dynasty,this article points out that Canton export lacquerware merchants had always been active on the stage of China's foreign trade in the Qing Dynasty.The business scope of Canton export lacquerware merchants had changed from solely focusing on lacquerware in the early period to later diversifying into various export handicrafts,reflecting a shift from the integration of production and marketing to the separation of production and marketing for Canton export lacquerware merchants.
