Rethinking the Form and Function of Bronze Mirrors Buried in Han Tombs of Zhejiang Province
Taking the burial analysis of bronze mirrors unearthed in Han Tombs of Xitouhuang community in Xiaoshan as an example, the establishment of the close relationship between copper mirrors and human beings is based on the the cultural cognition of knowing the present from the past and the image viewing and imagining in the funeral context of the Han Dynasty, and the use of images combined with inscriptions to gradually form the special function of introspection and correcting the body, protecting against evils, and blessing the descendants related to the funeral customs, which is compatible with the funeral context presented by the images in the tombs of the Han Dynasty. From the analysis of the two types of typical inscribed mirrors unearthed in the cemetery, some of the roughly made bronze mirrors with omitted characters and disordered images should be specially designed for funerals, which were popular among the middle and lower classes of Han Dynasty in Zhejiang with the spread of the official funeral rituals from the top to the bottom, and the craftsmen and the users reached a tacit agreement on the craftsmanship and tradition of the use of the artifacts,so that the omission of the images and the inscriptions did not influence the functioning of the bronze mirrors in the funerary context, which was not due to the different craftsmanship but rather to the difference in the context of the use.In the case of the Han mirrors, the different contexts in which they were used, rather than the craftsmanship, explain the differences in the style of the mirrors in the contexts of life and death.
