A Study on the Formation of Ancient Japanese Gardener Communities and Garden Building Groups
Ancient Japanese gardeners, also known as garden craftsmen, have had a clear and specific lineage since the medieval period. The formation of gardener communities, the development of garden building traditions, and the emergence of garden building groups have followed a relatively clear path and pattern.Through long-term practice and theoretical summarization, these groups have established core philosophies, specific transmission paths, and unique secret books for garden building, which are fundamental conditions for the formation of garden building groups.Consequently, the development of Japanese gardens has exhibited stable, orderly, and inheritable characteristics. However,as these groups grew larger and more stable, the garden building philosophies within them began to face risks of becoming closed off, lacking in innovation, and even becoming rigid. This paper mainly reviews existing Japanese garden literature, tracing the development process of Japanese gardeners, and garden building groups. It discusses the characteristics of garden building groups from ancient times to the Edo period and analyzes how the well-established garden building groups of the modern era evolved from historical lineages of gardeners. This provides a deeper understanding of Japanese gardens from historical perspectives and methodologies.
