Impact of Population Age Structure on Consumption Upgrading of Urban and Rural Residents—Empirical Study Based on CHFS 2019 Data
The impact of population age structure on the consumption upgrading of urban and rural resi-dents is empirically analyzed using the China Household Finance Survey(CHFS)2019 data. The results show that in general, the proportion of elderly population and the proportion of children have a positive im-pact on the consumption rate and Engel's coefficient, and a negative impact on the consumption level and the proportion of high-level consumption. The proportion of the elderly population and the proportion of children in rural residents have a greater negative effect on consumption upgrading than urban residents. The proportion of the elderly population significantly inhibited the consumption upgrading of urban and rural resi-dents in the eastern region and western region and rural residents in the central region. The proportion of children has significantly inhibited the consumption upgrading of urban and rural residents in the western re-gion and rural residents in the central region. The proportion of the elderly population significantly inhibited the consumption upgrading of urban and rural residents in the low-income group and the high-income group,as well as rural residents in the low-income group. The proportion of children significantly inhibited the con-sumption upgrading of urban residents in the low-income group and rural residents in all income groups.
