Economic Comparison Between Pumped Storage Power Stations and New Energy Storage Technologies
After the proposal of"2030 Carbon Peak,2060 Carbon Neutrality"goal, the energy industry has ushered in new development opportunities, and both pumped storage and new energy storage have achieved rapid development during the 14th Five Year Plan period. In the new power system, energy storage power sources occupy an important position, and the market size of different types of power sources is related to their economy, which basically determines the development scale. This article aims to compare and analyze the economic benefits of pumped storage and electrochemical energy storage, using a normalized degree of electricity method for comparative analysis.Pumped storage energy can comprehensively meet the requirements of safe operation of the power system. However, electrochemical energy storage is a power electronic device that cannot provide rotational inertia. When the system is called,it needs to be combined with other power sources, resulting in poor flexibility. This article analyzes the differences in technical and economic efficiency between the two,and converts them into differences in calculation parameters. The levelized electricity cost for pumped storage is 0.207 yuan/kWh,while the levelized electricity cost for electrochemical storage is 0.563 yuan/kWh,which is 2.7 times that of pumped storage. When the investment in electrochemical energy storage decreases and the number of charges and discharges increases, the cost of levelized kilowatt hours of electricity is still several times higher than that of pumped storage, indicating that pumped storage technology is economically superior to electrochemical energy storage.
