Lost Classics:On the Canonization and Canonical Status of CangjiePian
The canonical status of CangjiePian has not been discussed by previous scholars. It is a product of the Qin Dynasty's policy of"unifying scripts"and an important component of this initiative. It profoundly influenced the compilation of Shuo Wen JieZi in both text arrangement and structure. In the Han Dynasty,CangjiePian was not only closely related to official careers but also a classic highly valued by the aristocracy,as inferred from the accompanying documents in the same tomb.Of particular note is its significant impact on Han Dynasty poets of fu.The fact that it was the focus of two official conferences on characters indicates not only its special status but also its important connection with ancient Confucian classics. After the annotation work by Yang Xiong,Du Lin,Zhang Yi,Guo Pu,and others, the status of CangjiePian changed during the Southern and Northern Dynasties,Sui,and Tang Dynasties. It began to be an important reference for scholars annotating ancient books. This paper also suggests that we should re-evaluate ancient books that have obviously been lost but have had a profound historical impact.
