Evolution of polycentric structure in Chinese urban agglomerations based on population flow
Using the population flow frequency data and socio-economic statistics data from 2015 to 2018,this paper analyzes the population size, flow characteristics and spatial structure evolution of 19 urban agglomerations in China by using polycentric measurement methods. The main findings are as follows:(1)The morphological polycentric index among urban agglomerations has obvious differences and shows a weak monocentric trend, while the functional polycentric index of urban agglomerations is mostly low but shows an obvious rising trend.(2 )In terms of the polycentric matching types, the functional polycentric index of upgrading urban agglomerations is relatively high, but the morphological polycentric index is generally low.The morphological polycentric index of developing urban agglomerations is relatively high, but the functional polycentric index is mostly low. However, there are different matching types within the fostering urban agglomerations.(3 )In terms of the polycentric evolution, there is a clear trend of polycentric development in urban agglomerations for optimization and enhancement,as well as for development and growth. However, most urban agglomerations for cultivation and development exhibit a trend of monocentric development. The conclusions can provide support for formulating targeted polycentric development strategies for urban agglomerations.
