The Role of the Digital Economy in Advancing New Quality Productive Forces:Evidence from Total Factor Productivity Enhancement
The development of the digital economy has driven technological breakthroughs and fostered the innovative allocation of factors across various sectors, providing new momentum for the advancement of new quality productive forces in China.Using provincial-level data from 2011 to 2022,this study constructed indicators to measure the development of new quality productive forces from three perspectives:labor force, labor objects and means of labor. It examined the impact and spatial spillover effects of digital economy development on new quality productive forces and tested whether the improvement in total factor productivity severs as an indicator of the digital economy's role in enabling new quality productive forces.Furthermore, total factor productivity is decomposed into indices of technological progress and technical efficiency to investigate the pathways through which the digital economy exerts its influence. The findings indicate that the digital economy significantly promotes the development of new quality productive forces, accompanied by notable spatial spillover effects.Specifically, the digital economy has a strong positive effect on the development of new quality productive forces within a given region. Moreover, the development of new quality productive forces exhibits significant spatial autocorrelation, with high-concentration clusters primarily located in Yangtze River Delta, while low-concentration clusters are found in the Northwest and Northeast regions of China. The digital economy enhances total factor productivity through advancements in technological progress and improvements in technical efficiency, representing a critical enabler of new quality productive forces development. Therefore, accelerating the construction of digital infrastructure, increasing the adoption rate of digital technologies and improving the efficiency of data-driven resource allocation are crucial for advancing new quality productive forces.
