School physical education is an important component of physical education, and the high-quality school physical education course plays an irreplaceable role in building a leading sports nation and is one of the important ways to achieve a leading sports nation. But at present, there are still many deficiencies in physical education classes in primary and middle schools: the insufficient arrangement of physical education class time makes it difficult for students to develop the habit of physical exercise, and the insufficient attention to physical education classes leads to the serious phenomenon of occupying physical education classes. In order to improve this situation, this paper uses the literature method, inductive summary method and other research methods to analyze the current function of school physical education in China, and puts forward how to coordinate the development of school physical education in China under the background of building a leading sports nation, and to promote the development of students' physical and mental health and form the concept of life-long sports through school physical education, so as to improve the health quality of the people and help to build a leading sports nation.
