Development of a single-component and high-build waterborne epoxy primer for automotive components
[Introduction] It is proposed to prepare a cost-effective high-build waterborne epoxy primer for automotive components to meet the needs of the market. [Method] The effects of the proportions of film-forming materials i.e. waterborne epoxy emulsion EV6102 and waterborne acrylic emulsion LR-2052, the amounts of fumed silica CT-200 and water-based bentonite BP-188L, and the addition of different thickeners on the properties of the primer were studied. [Result] The primer prepared at a mass ratio of waterborne epoxy emulsion EV6102 to waterborne acrylic emulsion LR-2052 of 1:2, fumed silica CT-2000.5% (mass fraction), water-based bentonite BP-188L 0.4% (mass fraction), and thickener ACRYSOL ASE600.2% (mass fraction) has good initial water resistance, a pencil hardness of H, neutral salt spray resistance 300 hours, water resistance 1200 hours, and VOC (volatile organic compound) content of 30 g/L, and a single-coat thickness up to 150 μm. [Conclusion] The properties of the film of the single-component primer meet the requirements of automotive components.
