Preparation and properties of a waterborne zinc-rich epoxy paint with high corrosion spread prevention performance
[Introduction]To extend the service life of a coating, the spread of corrosion needs to be suppressed when the coating is damaged by preventing the diffusion of corrosive media through the scratch of the coating and further corrosion of the metal substrate.[Method]A waterborne zinc-rich epoxy paint with excellent corrosion spread prevention performance was prepared with epoxy emulsion, amine curing agent, pigments, fillers, corrosion inhibitor, and some auxiliary agents. The effects of the content of film-forming substance, the type of curing agent, and the combination of pigments and fillers on corrosion resistance of the coating were studied. The corrosion spread prevention mechanism of the coating was discussed.[Result]The paint prepared with 15%(mass fraction)of film-forming substance and a suitable amount of corrosion inhibitor by using polyamide as curing agent and combining sericite, superphosphate zinc white, and graphene as pigments and fillers showed the best comprehensive performance. After 2 160 hours of neutral salt spray test, its coating still had good adhesion to the substrate with an average corrosion propagation width of only 1.43 mm.[Conclusion]Both the improvement of wet adhesion of the coating by the addition of corrosion inhibitor and the improvement of the utilization rate of zinc powder by the addition of graphene give the coating excellent corrosion spread prevention performance.
