[Introduction]A low-temperature process for heat coloring of copper crafts was developed to overcome the shortcomings such as difficult operation and high temperature of traditional flame heating process.[Method]Nitrates were used as the main coloring agent,in combination with ethylene glycol as a co-solvent and some appropriate inorganic pigments. The heating process was operation by using a heat gun instead of a flame spray gun.[Result]The optimal composition of the chemical coloring solution are as follows:Bi(NO3)3·5H2O 12-20 g/L,Cu(NO3)2·3H2O 0-2 g/L,CuSO4·5H2O 0-3 g/L,NiSO4·6H2O 0-5 g/L,10%nitric acid 0-20 mL/L,ethylene glycol 20-50 mL/L,and inorganic pigments 20-50 g/L.The suitable coloring temperature ranges from 65 to 120 ℃.[Conclusion]This process is easy to operate with high safety, and can produce oxide films of good mechanical properties and vibrant colors.
