[Introduction]In the coating process of plastic parts for motorcycles, ultraviolet(UV)curing is the key procedure for curing UV varnish onto the plastic surfaces. In this paper, the effect of UV light intensity on the surface properties of coatings sprayed onto motorcycle plastic parts was studied.[Method]The commonly used nylon-glass fiber plastic motorcycle parts were sprayed and then irradiated by UV light of different intensities. The adhesion strength, hardness, glossiness, and impact resistance of the coatings were tested. The contents of elements on the surfaces of coatings were analyzed by energy-dispersive spectroscopy.[Result]The coatings cured by irradiation with high light intensity had better adhesion strength, glossiness, and impact resistance, less oxygen content on their surfaces, and little difference in hardness as compared with that cured at low light intensity.[Conclusion]As compared with the UV curing process at low light intensity, the oxygen inhibition effect in free-radical polymerization is less and the surface properties of the coatings are better for the curing process at high light intensity.
