Review and prospect of leprosy control in Xinjiang
Leprosy has been prevalent in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region(Xinjiang for short)for about 2 000 years, and it was also known locally as"Jiaozan".After founding of People's Republic of China,an investigation was carried out by Dr.DENG Yun-shan from the Northwest Medical College and Dr.WANG Cheng-yi from the Center of Xinjiang Epidemic Prevention and Medical. The results showed that the leprosy in Xinjiang was imported from India,Arabia,Afghanistan, etc.,rather than from other provinces of China. The government attaches great importance to the prevention and control of leprosy,by strengthening institutions and personnel training,Through 70 years of hard work, the expectancy of the patient's life significantly increases. The incidence of leprosy dropped from 2.70/100 000 to 0.003/100 000 in Xinjiang. However, the new challenges should be faced including reform and establishment of leprosy prevention and control system to adapt to new period, increase of the investment of funds, and the guidance of the development of infectious disease research with professional research policies in Xinjiang.
