The circumstance of learnt bahaviour which is carried from one langu age to another is considered as language transfer(Richards & Schmidt,2002). As Chinese and English are from dif erent language families,their language struct ure and cultural values are distinguishable from each other(Wang,2001).This paper wil go into further detail in developing a reflection on empirical data reg arding the negative ef ects of first language transfer from the aspects of syntax,l exicon and discourse.These are the areas considered to cause the problems experi enced by Chinese learners' in their attempts at writing.Bilingual instances wil als o be provided as wel to demonstrate the ef ect that first language transfer has o n Chinese language learners’ accuracy and proficiency.
