An Overview of the pre-Qin Confucian Thought on Integrity
The Confucian thought on integrity in the pre-Qin period is rich in content and can be understood both in the narrow sense and the broad sense.In the narrow sense,integrity only refers to clean moral character,including having desire but no greed,committing neither violence nor theft,inhibiting desire to nurture probity,and being principled but not stubborn.In the broad sense,integrity also includes the idea of clean governance and the practice of honest officials,and its realization paths mainly include cultivating one's moral character to nurture integrity,developing integrity with frugality,maintaining integrity by knowing shame,protecting integrity with justice,and promoting integrity with courtesy.integrity,clean governance and honest officials at a certain level reflect the requirement that officials govern in a clean manner and the three elements are inseparable.Integrity is the theoretical basis of honest officials and clean governance;clean governance is the environmental element of the formation and development of integrity and honest officials;and honest officials are the main carrier of integrity and clean governance.Honest officials account for a very small proportion of ancient officials,but the exemplary role they played can not be ignored.To study the thought on integrity,we cannot do without studying the thought on clean governance and honest officials.
