Analysis on Causes of Excessive Pantograph-Catenary Wear in Beijing Metro Line 6 and Countermeasures
The west extension of Beijing Metro Line 6 encountered since its initial operation excessive wear between the pantograph and the catenary, manifested by a dramatic increase in wear rate and a rough surface morphology of the carbon slider. This paper reports endeavors on analysis and handling of the aforementioned anomaly, including summarizing the induced equipment failures and performing experimental test.It is believed through the test analysis that the root cause is inadequate pressure of pantographs of the newly added passenger cabins. That inadequacy exacerbates pantograph-catenary wear and leads to wire drawing by first increasing frequency of offline arc between pantograph and catenary, and subsequently resulting in larger temperature rise of the contact position, softening of the contact wire, and evolution of the slider substances. The paper also puts forward specific countermeasures for improving the pantograph-catenary relationship.
