Engineering Difference Between 500 kV Cable and GIL Transmission Lines in Urban Power Grids
500 kV transmission lines in urban centers cannot apply overhead mode owing to the impact on urban planning and environment.Hence 500 kV cables have found large-scale application in urban power grids, and GIL transmission mode has also been gradually applied when larger current carrying capacity is needed. The two transmission modes have their own advantages and disadvantages, and their differences in technology and investment will even affect the considera-tion of system planning, power grid operation mode and the scale of urban central substations. This paper focuses on the differences in engineering design and investment between cable and GIL transmission mode from the perspectives of trans-mission capacity, transmission loss, tunnel section design, ventilation system, monitoring system, and investment cost,so as to provide useful information for the selection of 500 kV transmission mode in urban centers.
