A Comparative Study of the Literariness Reproduced in Four English Versions of Kuang Ren Ri Ji
This article establishes an aligned Chinese-English parallel corpus containing Kuang Ren Ri Ji and its four Eng-lish translations for further quantitative and qualitative analysis.A comparative study is carried out at the macro and micro levels to investigate how the four versions reproduce the literariness of the original text and explore the strategies and methods used by differ-ent translators. Then the reasons for these differences are also presented. The results show that Yang Xianyi and Chi-chen Wang tend to faithfully reproduce the literariness of the original text mainly through literal translation, trying to preserve the original style of Lu Xun;Lovell and Lyell prefer to bring their subjective initiative into translation through creative translation, realizing the"re-cre-ation"of literary translation,so as to conform to the poetic norms of the target language and improve the readability of the transla-tion.Moreover,this paper argues that the differences in the reconstruction of literariness are related to English versions'translation direction and publication motives and translators'views of translation.
