A Study on the Constraints of English Resultatives within Force-dynamic Theory
There are tough lexical and syntactic constraints for English resultatives.Wechsler(2001)posed the Event-argu-ment Homomorphism Model of Telicity to account for such constraints, but this model has some limitations and is not applicable to second langugage acquisition. This paper adopts the Force-dynamic Theory to analyse the constraints of English resultatives. The typical force-dynamic schema is agent(the force-exerting entity)+action(force exerting)+patient(the force recipient)+change of state(the result of force transimission). The schematic meaning is that the agent transmits a force to the patient through an action;as a result, the state of the patient changed. This schema not only has more explanatory power but also can privide more pratical impli-cations for second langugage acquisition.
