Misreading and Symbolism:American Newspapers'Interpretation of Chinese"Dragon"in the 20th Century:Corpus-based and Discourse Analysis
Cultural symbols are one of the powerful tools to shape the national image and enhance the soft power.As a very important symbol in Chinese traditional culture,"dragon"has been misunderstood in the process of cultural communication.Exami-ning the past cognitive changes of"dragon"in other countries and their influencing factors will help to summarize the experience of cultural communication and help to shape the national image.This study extracts the reports of the 20th century American news-papers on the"dragon"from the Google Books database,and builds a corpus.Based on the methods of corpus linguistics and dis-course analysis,this study explores the interpretation of the"dragon"in the 20th century American newspapers from an empirical perspective.The study found that the misunderstanding of the symbolic meaning of Chinese"dragon"in American newspapers is changing,dynamic,and influenced by many factors.
