The Forking Path between "Words" and "Action"——The Oriental "Path" Thoughts Absorbed Respectively by Heidegger and Babbitt
Both Heidegger and Babbitt make different approaches of "words" and "action" to the Oriental path thought, which concerns their different religious implication and ethical purpose. Heidegger's"Path—Das Sage"is"Das Ereignis—Das Sage",in the Geviert world of which the heaven, the earth, gods and man can reach each other. Humans are guardians of Being, measured by divinity. The path by Babbitt is manifested in his duality of human nature, and the access to the higher will which is the primordial fact in man can play the part of Grace;man is his own master and self-transcendent. Heidegger's"Tao—Path—Das Sage"embodies the path on the feminine side, and Babbitt's use of"path—inner action"embodies the masculinity of the path. Their different references to the Oriental path are different aspects of the Western modern manifestations of the"Incarnation"in the post-God era with a significance of intellectual history, reflect the different regional cultural characteristics of Germany and the Unit-ed States,as well as the different ethical orientation of life.
