Comparative Study on Fairy Tales and Novels Based on Transitivity Theory
As two important genres of literature, fairy tale and novel generally have different receivers:one for children and the other for adults. Due to this difference, stylistic features of them are not the same. This study takes the Transitivity System in Halliday's Systemic Functional Linguistics as its theoretical framework, which is highly practicable in discourse analysis. In this study, both quantitative and qualitative method are adopted in order to find out the differences of the stylistic features between the two genres in terms of transitivity. It is found out that not only the distributions of different processes are different in the two genres, the choices of verbs and sub-categories in the same kind of process are also different.
