The term " Huishi Hou Su" originates from The Analects of Confucius. Throughout history, numerous scholars have continuously debated the interpretation of "Huishi Hou Su",with the "Apply the white color after color painting" theory proposed by Zheng Xuan of the Eastern Han Dynasty and the "Apply color painting on the plain silk " theory put forward by Zhu Xi of the Southern Song Dynasty being the most typical. In response to critical analysis on the interpretation of "Huishi Hou Su",this paper conducts an in-depth analysis by examining the influential factors of "Huishi","Su","Hou" and the procedure of painting, aiming to explore the root of critical analysis on the interpretation of "Huishi Hou Su" . Through the analysis, it is found that when "Huishi" refers to a particular decorative craft of textiles, it should be translated as "painting on silk" .When "Huishi" refers to independent painting art, it should be translated as "painting". When "Su" refers to the white pigment, it is applied after color painting, and when "Su" refers to the plain silk, it means the ground color. Ultimately, the conclusion is drawn that the essence of critical analysis on the interpretation of "Huishi Hou Su" lies not in the procedural dispute of color painting itself, but in the underlying Confucian "Ritual" ideology.
