As an important carrier of regional collaborative development,metropolitan areas play a key role in China's urbanisation process.In order to systematically grasp the development context and cutting-edge trends of research on the construction of metropolitan areas in China,this study uses the literature on the construction of metropolitan areas collected by China National Knowledge Infrastructure(CNKI)as the data source,and visualises the analysis using CiteSpace and SATI bibliometric analysis tools to map the scientific knowledge in the field of research on the construction of metropolitan areas and comprehensively and systematically sort out the research process of the construction of metropolitan areas.The results show that the research on the construction of metropolitan areas in China has obvious periodic characteristics,and has grown rapidly after 2019.The research process can be divided into three stages:initial development,diverse exploration and rapid development.The research authors and institutions have weak cooperative relationships.The research hotspots are urban agglomerations,urbanization,Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei,Yangtze River Delta,etc.A comprehensive overview of the current situation and hot topics in the study of metropolitan areas has led to a future outlook on the research of metropolitan area construction from the four dimensions of concept-driven,content innovation,technology empowerment,and method leadership.The research results provide an important reference for further promoting theoretical exploration and policy formulation for the construction of metropolitan areas in China.
