Research on the Newly Discovered Thousand-Armed Avalokitesvara Sutra Illustration in Anyue,Sichuan Province
While investigating a group of cave temples in Anyue,Sichuan province,an investigation team from Sichuan University found a new painting of the Thousand-Armed Avalokitesvara(Guanyin)sutra illustration dating from the early Song dynasty.The illustration depicts the"fifteen good beings"in bas relief and a Thousand-Armed Guanyin surrounded by attendants in high relief.This is the first time that this type of Guanyin sutra illustration has been discovered in Sichuan and Chongqing,which enriches the current collection of Guanyin statues in the region and reflects the Buddhist cultural connection between Dunhuang,Sichuan,and Chongqing.
