Re-Investigating the Date When Zhang Huaishen Rebuilt the Large Northern Buddha Statue
This study analyzes Dunhuang manuscript S.4782,Fragmental Report on Income and Expenditure,which was like-ly written in 870 CE,or the year of Gengyin,the 11th year of the Xiantong era in the Tang dynasty.The"Maitreya statue built by the government"in the tenth year of the Xiantong era(869 CE)mentioned in the text should refer to the reconstruction of the large northern Buddha statue mentioned in both the Stele Inscription of Zhang Huaishen's Benevolent Rule,and P.4660(10),Eulogy for Monastic Official Ci Bian.This renovation can be dated the end of February in the tenth year of the Xiantong era.
