A Brief Investigative Report on the Cliff Carvings of Shifowan in Renshou County,Sichuan Province
The cliff carvings of Shifowan are located in Shaolou Village,Fangjia Township,Renshou County,Sichuan Province.There are currently thirteen extant niches that include a range of image combinations,including Three Buddhas,Seven Buddhas,Fifty-three Buddhas,one disciple and two attendants,one Buddha and two bodhisattvas,and one Buddha,two disciples and two bodhisattvas.The themes identifiable in the sculptures include depictions of Maitreya,Sengha,the Buddha and Fifty-two Bodhisattvas,Fifty-three Bodhisattvas,Seven Buddhas,and Kshitigarbha.According to the image themes and style of the sculp-tures,it can be inferred that these cliff carvings were created in the period between the late 8th century and the first half of the 9th century.
