This paper presents a summary of the author's memories of conducting research since applying for a job at the Dunhuang Cultural Relics Research Institute,now known as the Dunhuang Academy.The author began his career by reading through Dunhuang documents,becoming familiar with the objects of study,and taking down copious notes on his findings.From this experience,the author has enriched his knowledge greatly over the years,eventually moving from being an outsider to being an expert.As for his research approach,he has developed a methodology that goes from"point to surface,"from"low to high,"and finally from"specialized to general"in order to resolve academic issues.
