The Xiangtangshan Grottoes are one of three ancient royal cave groups(the other two are the Yungang Grottoes and the Longmen Grottoes).Construction of the Xiangtangshan Grottoes began in the Northern Qi dynasty,and continued through the Sui,Tang,Song,Yuan and Ming dynasties.This paper presents a preliminary study on the colors used to paint the Northern Qi caves of the Xiangtangshan Grottoes by comparing the colors used in these caves with those used in Yecheng,as well as the colors used to paint the Buddhist sculptures in Quyang.
