A Preliminary Study on the Early Tang Principle of"Integrating the Three Religions"as Reflected in the First Paragraph of the Preface to the Renovation of the Mogao Caves by Li Kerang
This paper discusses the influence of the early Tang dynasty principle of"integrating Buddhism,Confucianism and Taoism"in Dunhuang based on the first paragraph of the Preface to the Renovation of the Mogao Caves by Li Kerang and a textual study with comparative reference made to extant Buddhist texts from the early Tang dynasty related to the theory of achieving a balance between Buddhism,Confucianism and Taoism.This study concludes that this paragraph in the Preface was heavily influenced by the aforementioned Buddhist texts and clearly reflects the social trend of"integrating Buddhism,Confu-cianism and Taoism"that was popular in the Early Tang dynasty as well as its influence on Dunhuang society.In addition,this research supplements several missing characters in the text.
