Russian Explorations in Central Asia at the Turn of the 20th Century and Sergei Oldenburg's Expedition to Dunhuang
From the mid-19th century, the enormous landscape of Eurasia became the scene of a rivalry between two em-pires,Russia and Britain, which aimed to gain control over new markets and sources of raw materials.Central Asia was the main object of Russia's military and political interests, and as a result,a series of expeditions to Central Asia were conducted by Rus-sian explorers, including S.F.Oldenburg,who conducted two expeditions to Chinese Xinjiang and Dunhuang.Between 1914-1915,Oldenburg led his expedition to Dunhuang, studying the caves at Mogao and gathering a large number of ancient relics in-cluding manuscripts, statues and murals, which were respectively kept in the Hermitage Museum, the St.Petersburg Branch of the Archives of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts of the Russian Academy of Sciences.Since then, research on the Oldenburg collection has produced a large number of research results.
