Research on the Impact of Digital Economy on Pollution Reduction and Carbon Reduction—A Quasi-Natural Experiment Based on the National Big Data Comprehensive Pilot Zone
Leading green development with the digital economy is an important opportunity to achieve improvement in economic and environmental benefits. This study is based on the quasi-natural experiment of the National Big Data Comprehensive Pilot Zone, selecting the panel data from 281 cities of China from 2006 to 2022 as the research sample.Using methods such as multi-period differences-in-differences model and mediation effect model,it empirically demonstrates the pollution reduction and carbon reduction effects and mechanisms of the digital economy from multiple dimensions. The results indicate that:(1)The digital economy can promote the coordinated reduction of urban pollution emissions and carbon emissions, that is,there is a pollution reduction and carbon reduction effect, and the conclusion still holds after a series of robustness tests.(2)The development of the digital economy enhances the level of pollution reduction and carbon reduction in cities by promoting environmental regulation intensity, upgrading industrial structure, and improving energy utilization efficiency.(3)In pilot cities for regional demonstration and coordinated infrastructure development, central and western cities,resource-based cities, and peripheral cities, the pollution reduction and carbon reduction effects of the digital economy are more pronounced. The empirical research in this article provides reference for the digital economy to promote comprehensive green development.
