Effectiveness and prospects of the Geological Joint Fund Program
The National Natural Science Foundation of China and the China Geological Survey collaboratively established and implemented the Geological Joint Fund Program in 2022,encompassing both fundamental and applied research. The former involves Earth evolution, environmental processes, and Earth system science;the latter focuses on fields such as mineral resources, geological hazards, and ecological environments.A total of 59 projects will be funded in 2022~2023,including 39 projects dedicated to geotectonic evolution and its resources and energy impacts,17 projects related to the Earth's surface systems, particularly geohazards, hydrogeology and environmental geology, and subsurface space, and 3 projects focusing on new geological survey technologies and methodologies.Cross-cutting projects comprised 67%of the funded projects, reflecting an increasing demand for comprehensive skills in geological surveys.Implementation of the Joint Geological Fund, with the active participation of universities, research institutes, and geological exploration units, has substantially enhanced the scientific and technological innovation capacity of the geological industry, injecting vitality and impetus into the development of geological careers and scientific and technological innovation. The paper summarizes the program's implementation to provide a reference for evaluating the program's impact and to suggest directions for future development of the Joint Geological Fund and the deepening integration of China's geological survey.
