Hybridization of electrical discharge machining(EDM)and electrochemical machining(ECM),short for ECM/EDM,is a crucial way to achieve innovation and breakthroughs in electrical machining technology.Compared to a single process,ECM/EDM improves process capability,accuracy,and surface integrity by utilizing the spatio-temporal synergistic effect of the discharge-electrolysis hybrid process.Starting with introducing the basic concept and classifications of ECM/EDM,this review summarized the critical progress of ECM/EDM in recent years.An outlook on the future development of ECM/EDM technology was provided,highlighting that the large-scale engineering application still requires breakthroughs in machining performance,process modeling,intelligent control of machining processes,and machine tool technologies.EDM-ECM sequential process and arc hybrid machining are beyond the scope of this article.
