Examining the"Poetry Societies"of the Joseon Middle-class Literati in the 17th and 18th Centuries
The"middle-class literati"is a concept opposite to the"Yang ban Literati,"and its composition is more complicated, including interpreters, medical officers, painters, etc.from the middle class,as well as slaves and officials from the lowest class.Scholars believe that the main middle-class literati's poetry societies of this period were the Zhenliutai Poetry Society, the Samchungdong Poetry Society, the Luoshe Poetry Society, and the Song-seok-won Poetry Society, but not all of the above can be called"poetry societies".Among them,"Zhenliutai Poetry Society"should be changed to"Zhenliutai Poem as Reward","Samchungdong Poetry Society"should be"Samchungdong Poetry Party".Though"Luoshe Poetry Society"is not a poetry society in the strict sense,it has the beginning form of a poetry society,so it can use poetry society in its name."Song-seok-won Poetry Society"is the first official poetry society of the Joseon Dynasty for middle-class literati. The middle-class literati communicated with each other and found a sense of belonging to the class by means of the society. They also compiled an anthology of poems by the middle-class poets. The growth of the social power of the middle-class literati was inseparable from these societies.
