Plural"Others":The Dialectic of"Seeing"and"Being Seen"in Colonial East Asia——The Significance of"Other"Narratives in Mei Niang's Works
The issue of the problem of"otherness"in East Asian colonial literature is complex and of great theoretical significance.Through analyzing the"other"narratives in the works of Mei Niang,a writer in the period of Japanese colonization of East Asia,we find the theoretical significance of the"other"narratives in East Asian colonial literature. It not only breaks the"West and East"and the"Self and Other"binary oppositions of Western European colonialism, but also differs from the"Empire Writes Back"theory in postcolonialism,Jameson's"national allegory"and Homi Bhabha's"third space"concept. It has opened up a new theoretical space for the colonial"other".
