Does Comparative Literature Need a Canon?——The Triple Significance of Canonical Methodology in Comparative Literature
Whether it is the influence study emphasizing homology,the parallel study focusing on similarity,or the variation study proposed by Chinese scholars in recent years based on the differences between Eastern and Western civilizations and the flux in cross-cultural dialogues,the theoretical development,the discipline construction,and the talents training of comparative literature all need canon.As a methodology,the canon transcends the documentary nature of research object and the conceptual nature of research theory and rises to the level of the methodological significance of comparative literature.Its theoretical method is threefold:"empirical study of canonicality","analogical study of canonicality"and"variation study of canonicality".
