Prosperity and Luxury:the Image of Japanese Marketplaces in the Writings of Korean Messengers
Through their diplomatic visits to Japan,Korean messengers witnessed the prosperity of marketplaces in cities and towns, which gradually changed their negative perceptions of Japan.Through a comparative study of the economies of the two countries, they identified the strengths of Japan and the weakness of the Joseon dynasty, and they endeavored to find out the specific reasons for Japan's economic prosperity.Meanwhile, based on the concepts of thrift and civilization, they exposed and criticized many social problems behind the civilization and luxury of Japanese cities, and they further believed that the Japanese people were uncultured and uncultivated, which reflected ancient Joseon scholars'cultural misinterpretation about Japan.
