The equal-diameter umbrella-skirt structure of 500 kV SAS550 SF6 gas-insulated current transformer appears serious creepage along its surface in the thunderstorm cases,which is prone to form a flashover discharge channel as well as a rainwater conductive channel on the surface of the insulation casing,causing lightning wave invasion and leading to such a penetrating flashover.By analyzing the accident characteristics and fault causes of penetrating flashover discharge caused by electric field distortion of this type of current transformer,the improvement strategy is proposed for the UHV equipment with a similar structure,which is available for reference in the design,manufacturing and safe operation of UHV current transformers.
