The Confucian Filial Piety in Konjaku Monogatarishū
Konjaku Monogatarishū is a masterpiece of ancient Japanese speech literature. Its stories about Japan vividly describe the life of all social classes at that time, and also some famous filial sons and daughters. The filial piety from these stories is deeply influenced by Chinese Confucianism, which can be concluded as "parents are kind while sons and daughters are filial". We can see that filial piety was highly valued then in Japan. At the same time, religious "Buddhist speech" and instructive "secular speech" are two main types in the book. The filial piety from Confucianism is also consolidated by the concept of karma in Buddhism.
