An Analysis on the Causes of Dimmesdale's Tragedy in The Scarlet Letter
Written by American writer Hawthorne, The Scarlet Letter is a love tragedy under western religious asceticism. Dimmesdale, who commits adultery with the married woman Hester Prynne, chooses self-punishment for redemption. Hawthorne, as a great romantic novelist in the 19th century, explores Dimmesdale's inner evolution from sin to soul liberation, and the causes of his redemption. By doing this, the author appeals for the liberation of human nature. At the same time, he also revealed the narrowness of Calvinist Puritanism and its spiritual destruction.
